Yves Saint Laurent, one of the major designers of the 20th century, who liberated women by creating a contemporary wardrobe died Sunday night at the age of 71 after a long illness.

He was born Yves-Mathieu Saint-Laurent on August 1 1936 in Oran, Algeria, became famous very early on in his career.

He arrived in Paris at the age of 17, where he became an assistant to Christian Dior in 1954, then his successor, after Christian Dior’s untimely death in 1957.

YSL’s very first fashion show in 1958 was a resounding success with his "Trapèze" line which broke with the ‘wasp’ shape that was fashionable at the time.

In 1961, he created his own fashion house in partnership with Pierre Bergé. Together, one the creator the other the manager, they built an empire with a logo of three black letters on a cream-coloured background which was to travel round the world.

He retired from the world of fashion in 2002 after 40 years of success and emblematic models such as the trouser suit.
